Term Life Insurance

Meaningful protection for a chosen chapter of life. Explore how the term, death benefit, renewal and conversion options affect the value of a policy.

Explore the essentials

Protection for the years that matter.

Term life is designed to provide a death benefit if an insured person dies during a specified term while the policy is in force and the claim is covered. Common term choices include 10, 20, and 30 years, depending on insurer and contract.

  • Often used to help address temporary obligations such as mortgage balances or years when dependents rely on income.
  • Generally offers a lower initial premium than comparable permanent life insurance.
  • Typically does not accumulate cash value.
  • At expiration, renewal or conversion may be possible—but only under the terms of the contract.

Example: $500,000 coverage for 20 years. A covered death during an active term could result in a death benefit; death after term expiration would not trigger a benefit under that expired term.

What the statistics actually say

“Only 1–2% pay out”—what does that mean?

The widely repeated term-life percentage is not a reliable measure of claims being denied.

%

Do not confuse an expired policy with a denied claim.

A frequently quoted 1% figure for the share of term policies ever paying a death benefit cannot be substantiated by a current, independent industry-wide dataset. Investopedia reported that about 2% of all individual life policies in force paid a death benefit in 2023, but that combines term and permanent products and describes one year—not the lifetime payout rate of term policies.

For term insurance, a policy ending because the insured survived the coverage period is not the same as an insurer denying a covered claim.

Four practical questions

These are especially useful when comparing terms and premium structures.

Coverage duration

How long will you need this death benefit? Match the coverage period to the financial obligation where appropriate.

Renewal provisions

Can you renew? Does the premium rise at renewal, and is there a final age for renewal?

Conversion privileges

Does the contract permit conversion to permanent coverage? Review the cutoff date, eligible contracts and future cost.

Lapse and exclusions

What happens if premiums stop? Which exclusions and contestability provisions apply?

These answers are general and do not replace an insurance contract.

If I outlive my term, do I receive the face amount?

Usually not. Standard term insurance pays a death benefit only upon a covered death while the policy is in force. Special return-of-premium contracts differ, and can cost more.

Are 1–2% of submitted claims the only ones approved?

No. A low proportion of policies resulting in a claim is a completely different measure from the proportion of submitted covered claims paid.

Is term always cheaper?

Term coverage generally starts with lower premiums for equivalent protection, but costs depend on the insured, policy design, age, underwriting, and the time horizon.

Can I convert the policy?

Some contracts offer conversion options, with deadlines and terms that vary by insurer. A licensed agent can review the official contract.
